American online media streaming service, Netflix, Inc. has announced the commencement of its 'AV1' video codec on Android devices, from Google's VP9, upgrading its compression efficiency by 20 per cent. However, the company said the 'AV1' only supports "selected titles" once the 'Save Data' option is enabled by its subscribers. This would reduce the usage of cellular data while using the app.

Though Netflix hasn't revealed much on the feat, it said it plans to introduce the 'AV1' codec to all devices in due time.

“In the spirit of making AV1 widely available, we are sponsoring an open-source effort to optimize 10-bit performance further and make these gains available to all,” the company said in a blogpost.

AOMedia Video 1 (AV1) is a royalty-free video coding format designed by Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) and used to transmit videos on the internet with higher compression efficiency. AV1 is also important as it consumes less cellular data.

The use of 'AV1' on Apple devices will require significant as it doesn't support VP9 and HEVC, making its devices unable to stream Youtube videos in 4K resolutions.

However, tech experts have noted that using AV1 codec for YouTube playbacks initiates warning notification saying "Streaming AV1 in HD requires a powerful computer."
