NPFL Championship: History Either Way

History will be made Saturday when the curtain falls on the 2017 Nigeria Professional Football League as both Plateau United and MFM look to claim their first ever championship against defending champions, Enugu Rangers, and El-Kanemi Warriors respectively.

In games to be played simultaneously at Jos and Maiduguri, both teams will contend against fairly dramatic antecedents.

In their 2016 triumph which ended a 32-year championship drought, Rangers had beaten El-Kanemi 4-0 in Enugu to edge Rivers United by just 3 points. On Saturday, should Plateau United fail to dethrone the defending champions, El-Kanemi will again have to lose if MFM must make history.

For the 41-year old Plateau United, it’s been a generational wait and Jos fans will be hoping that the gods would be fair in handing them the title rather than to MFM which was established 10 years ago, in 2007.

We Are Battle Ready – Plateau United Captain

For Plateau United captain, Elisha Golbe, nothing short of victory on Saturday will do for the Kennedy Boboye tutored lads.

“We are battle ready, we are looking forward to lifting the league title and we shall do so on Saturday,” he said to NPFL media.

“The game against Rangers is like a cup final for us and we are taking it very seriously. We have not come this far to miss out on the trophy.”

Gole, an integral part of the team from the start of the season, he has led his troops to the brink of lifting the NPFL title in only their second season back to the top flight after the Jos club were relegated in 2011.
