Akwa United Football Club of Uyo has been able to secure 68 points from 36 games, a goal difference of +27 and 4 losses are just a point away from winning what will be a historic NPFL title with MFM Football Club of Lagos the only team on their way of achieving the feat. The Promise Keepers were able to seal continental football for next season and also stamping their foot on the title when they played out a 1-1 draw with FC Ifeanyi Ubah on matchday 36 in Nnewi.
The team will now need only a point to clinch the title as second and third place teams, Nawsarawa United and Enyimba are six points below them on the log. Related to this, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and League Management Company (LMC) have made final alterations to the final round of matches in the league (Week 38).
The games which were earlier scheduled for Sunday, August 8, 2021, will now be played on Thursday, August 5, 2021, in all the designated top-flight venues. Also, the 2021 Aiteo Cup final (Nigeria’s Cup competition final) will now take place on Sunday, August 8, 2021.
The adjustments gathered were due to the August 8 deadline that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) gave to Nigeria to submit names of their representatives in next season’s inter-club competitions.
The new arrangements have also seen four Week 37 fixtures rescheduled. The games involving Aiteo Cup semi-finalists; Rivers United vs. Lobi Stars, Nasarawa United vs. Rangers, Enyimba vs. Sunshine Stars have all been postponed for an extra twenty-four hours, till Monday, August 2, 2021 (while Kano Pillars vs. Wikki Tourists was also shifted for fair play).
The two semi-final matches in Men’s Aiteo Cup will be played on Friday, July 30, 2021. Nasarawa United will face Sunshine Stars in Asaba while Rivers United will trade tackles with neighbours Bayelsa United in Lagos.
