The 32nd edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) will kick off on Friday 21 June 2019 in Egypt. With draws having been completed, the Super Eagles have been handed a somewhat comfortable group featuring two debutants.

The draw which took place behind the famous Giza Pyramids on Friday, had 24 nations assembled into six groups of four teams each. This is the first time in the history of the tournament to have 24 teams.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been placed in Group B which features Burundi, Madagascar, and Guinea. Burundi and Madagascar are debutants in what is seen as a comfortable group for the Super Eagles.

However, Nigeria first-team coach Gernot Rohr who was also present at the AFCON draws, insists his team have a lot on their hands.

“Group B will be tough. Guinea, Madagascar, and Burundi are decent sides so we have to prepare well,” Rohr said.

The tournament which begins on June 21 will feature host Egypt facing Zimbabwe, while the first game of the Super Eagles will be on June 22, where the Super Eagles of Nigeria will face Burundi.

In the build-up to the tournament, Rohr revealed that Nigeria will face Ghana and Senegal as they prepare to have a successful tournament.

“We plan to play build-up games vs Ghana (in Nigeria), and maybe Senegal.”
