Over 120 athletes from over 20 clubs and states are expected to participate in the 5th National Triathlon Championship from May 4 to 6 at the National Stadium, Lagos. At a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday, president of the Nigeria Triathlon Union Lanre Glover said there would be youth and elite categories, adding that the athletes had the option of participating in either the full triathlon or the duathlon events.

Glover said, “In this edition of the championship, we are going to operate the full triathlon, that is, swim, bike and run; and duathlon where the athletes are expected to run, bike and run. We shall also be having the sprint distance, not full distance.


In the triathlon event, the athletes will swim for 500m and go on a 10km bike race and a 5km run while in the duathlon, the contest would be in 5km run, 10km bike and another 5km run.”

 

He said the prize money at stake is N400,000 for the elite and youth athletes.

 

Glover said the president of the Nigeria Olympic Committee Habu Gumel and Linkage Assurance Plc donated the money.

 

The winners in both male and female categories will go home with N50, 000, second will get N30, 000, while the third-place athletes will get N20, 000.

 

Glover also revealed that the NTU would host an Olympic Solidarity Coaching course from May 9 – 16 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, with 25 coaches in attendance.
