No overtakes occurred in the Formula 1 race in Melbourne on Sunday throughout the last 20 laps, leading to Max Verstappen criticising how the car design has caused races to be 'boring'. According to Macca, the Redbull driver was stuck behind the Haas of Kevin Magnussen early on and then the McLaren of Fernando Alonso, Verstappen came home in a disappointing sixth position.
"Completely worthless," is how the Dutchman described the season opener. "I would have turned off the TV. Very boring. "You do your best to try something, and I was in DRS range all the time, but there is nothing you can do.
"It is more down to the cars, because there used to be no problem with overtaking." The likes of Mario Andretti have joined the calls for F1 to reconsider the aerodynamic fundamentals of the current cars, as entertaining wheel to wheel battles become all too rare.
"They were a second slower than the Ferraris," said Verstappen of the Haas cars. "They were just lucky that they came out in front of us."And here you cannot overtake. Look at Hamilton and Vettel.
And the same story with Alonso. "They were also much slower, but you can't pass them. You try, but it doesn't make any difference.
"Even if you are one-and-a-half seconds faster, it still isn't possible to overtake."
