The International Association of Athletics Federations on Friday confirmed Nigeria along with eight other countries for the women’s 4x400m relay at the 2018 World Indoor Championships in Birmingham from March 2 to 4. In a statement, the IAAF listed Nigeria along with the Czech Republic, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Poland, Portugal, Ukraine and the United States for the event.
The country’s women 4x400m relay team currently consists of Patience Okon-George, Regina George, Yinka Ajayi and Glory Nathaniel. They reached the semi-finals of the event at the London 2017 World Championships.
Nigeria, who have won 11 medals at the World Indoors, will hope to add another one to their haul. It is the third consecutive appearance in the event for Nigeria and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria will hope to set another African record in the event (3:29.67) like it did four years ago at the Ergo Arena in Sopot, Poland.
Nigeria has however yet to make a podium finish in the event at the World Indoors.
In the men’s 4x400m relay, Nigeria were absent as the world body listed Belgium, the Czech Republic, the Dominican Republic, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Jamaica, Poland, Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Ukraine and the United States for the event.
According to the IAAF, 618 athletes from 145 teams have been entered for the 18th edition of the competition hosted for the second time by the United Kingdom’s second largest city.
The United States is the defending champion in both the men’s and women’s races.
