President Muhammadu Buhari has approved Nigeria’s immediate withdrawal from all international basketball competitions with immediate effect. This was disclosed on Thursday in Abuja by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ismaila Abubakar on behalf of the Minister, Sunday Dare.

He said, “Following the unending crisis which has plagued and nearly crippled the development of basketball in Nigeria, President Buhari has approved the withdrawal of Nigeria from all international basketball competitions for a period of two years”.

According to reports, the recent development would allow the “setting up of an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee the management and development of the domestic basketball leagues in Nigeria”.

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has been embroiled in a leadership tussle for the last 5 years where two parallel NBBF elections were held in 2017 and 2022, resulting in the emergence of 2 different governing bodies.
