Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a five-match ban following his red card in the first leg of the Spanish Super cup where Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 3-1 at the Camp Nou. The ban was contained in a verdict passed by Spanish Football Governing Body (RFEF) on Monday after reviewing the incident.

The reigning FIFA player of the year was sent off after picking a second yellow card minutes. Ronaldo had earned the first yellow when he took off his shirt to celebrate his superb goal that put Madrid ahead in the game.

The referee, Burgos Bengoetxea issued him the second yellow card for diving and subsequently sent him off. Dissatisfied with the referees decision, Ronaldo slightly shoved the referee, a decision RFEF said violated article 96 of the disciplinary code.
