President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed ex-Super Eagles star and Atlanta 1996 Olympics gold medalist, Daniel Amokachi, his special assistant on sports. Amokachi who bagged a winners medal at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia was initially named as Nigeria’s Football Ambassador by President Buhari.
The former Everton forward appointment was confirmed in a letter signed by the Secretary to the federal government Boss Mustapha confirming the 47-year-old’s appointment, dated August 17, 2020.
“I am pleased to inform you that Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has approved your appointment as Special Assistant on Sports - The appointment takes effect from the 11th of August, 2020. As Special Assistant on Sports, Amokachi is expected to advise the President on all sports matters.”
“The former Everton of England player was earlier in the year named Nigeria’s Football Ambassador. Although a ceremonial role, as Ambassador he is expected to mentor youngsters.” the statement said.
The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, on Thursday, said the appointment of Amokachi has since taken effect.
Amokachi began his career with Ranchers Bees Football Club of Kaduna and played for Club Brugge of Belgium, Besiktas of Turkey, Everton of England and Colorado Rapids.
