The Director-General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim has reacted over the recent controversy surrounding the dress code for the corps members.

The NYSC DG who spoke through, Mrs. Adenike Adeyemi, the agency Director of press and public relations, calling on corps members to always follow instructions issued to them by the NYSC office.

Accordingly, recall Dailypost reported that the NYSC sacked two of its corps members from the orientation camp over refusal to wear trousers.

The statement partly reads; “The DG notes with great concern the negative perception of the scheme’s dress code, arising mostly from some corps members’ disobedience to the dictates of the code.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the scheme has maintained one dress code since May 22, 1973 when it was first established, devoid of ethnic, religious or gender bias.

“The code remains a pair of khaki trousers and shirt; crested vest; white vest; a pair of white shorts; a pair of zebra-striped socks; a pair of jungle boots; a pair of canvas; belt and fez cap.

“This depends on camp activity at any point in any time.”

The DG stressed that the orientation camp being a training ground is predicated on discipline and decency.

Therefore, any other dress code that is contrary to the approved one will be deemed a contravention to the law.

According to him, it will be culpable for a female corps member to engage on obstacle crossing and other physical training activities on camp, including parade, in skirt or gown.

“Those will expose her indecently, thus, leaving little or nothing to imagination.

He frowned at some corps members who for some religious believe resorts to turn the trouser issued to them into skirts, saying the scheme consider such act as protest to the constituted authority on the one hand and indecency on the other.

The DG revealed that it was the reason the scheme has an undertaking form that each and every corps members fill undertaking they will abide by all rules and not to deface or change any of the agency gear issued to them while still serving.

He clarified that the NYSC contrary to some speculation did not approve Hijab as part of its dress code.
