2023: Elections Will Be Free, Fair And Credible – President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has reassured that the 2023 general elections would be free, fair and credible, saying manipulations would not be condoned. Buhari gave this assurance while hosting West African Elders Forum Pre-Election Mediation Mission, led by former Sierra Leonean President, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma at the State House, Abuja. Mr. President said the elections held in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun states serve as an indication that the federal government will not allow meddling in elections.

President Buhari Nominates Lauretta Onochie As NDDC Board Chairperson

President Muhammdu Buhari has forwarded the name of Lauretta Onochie as the substantive chairperson of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NNDC). The Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, on Wednesday, at the plenary read the nomination letter sent to the senate by the president naming 14 others as members of the board. Mr. President has in recent past nominated Onochie as a commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in October 2020. Her nomination however sparked outrage over concerns that she is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), but responding a presidential aide said she resigned her membership of the ruling party in 2019.

Violent Campaigns: INEC Chairman Summons Political Parties

Worried by the incessant violence clashes at campaigns and growing resort to incendiary comments barely three weeks after signing the Peace Accord, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, has summoned a meeting with leaders of political parties. Yakubu who disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday, during the training of master trainers on election technology for the 2023 general election, described the development as worrisome. He cautioned parties and their supporters to focus on issues and steer clear of attacks on each other. This is coming barely 24 hours after the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) campaign was attacked by suspected thugs in Kaduna State. Ahead of the commencement of the campaigns on September 28, there had been hostile and abusive verbal exchanges between the supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu and the Labour Party flag bearer, Peter Obi.

Ademola Adeleke Freezes All Osun Bank Accounts

The Newly inaugurated Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, has frozen all government accounts in banks and other financial institutions in the state. The governor, who gave the instruction as his first executive order during his inauguration address at the Osogbo township stadium said all appointments made by the past administration in the state would be reviewed. “I hereby issue the directive which will be backed up with appropriate Executive orders: Immediate freezing of all government accounts in banks and other financial institutions,” Adeleke said.

Ekiti Assembly Impeaches, Replaces Speaker

The Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Gboyega Aribisogan has been impeached and indefinitely suspended by 17 out of the 25 members of the Assembly less than a week after his swearing-in as the state’s House of Assembly Speaker. He was sacked on Monday and immediately replaced by Olubunmi Adelugba, who was elected as Ekiti state’s first female Speaker of the House of Assembly.

President Muhammadu Buhari has scored his administration high even as his eight-year tenure is about to elapse. While declaring open the last Ministerial Performance Review Retreat of his administration, the president said high-impact projects have been executed across the country meeting the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians. The Retreat was organised to evaluate the level of progress made in the implementation of the Nine Priority Agenda of his Administration. The president highlighted remarkable progress made in the areas of agriculture, economy, infrastructure, security, health, anti-corruption among others. He told participants and guests at the retreat including the Keynote Speaker and immediate past President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, that over 3,800 KM of roads had been constructed across the country.
