The National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu has expressed concern over the wave of mass defection that has hit the party as the party prepares for the general election. Accordingly, so far, seven senators of the APC have dumped the party for other opposition parties after a failed attempt to secure the progressive ticket ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Amongst the aggrieved members who have dumped the party so far are; Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi) Adamu Aliero (Kebbi), Dauda Jika (Bauchi), Ahmad Babba Kaita (Katsina), Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano), Lawal Yahaya Gumau (Bauchi), and Francis Alimikhena (Edo).
While speaking with newsmen after having a closed-door meeting with the aggrieved Senators, the APC Party Chairman, Adamu told reporters that it was unfortunate, that the progressive is losing some of its big wigs and the party is making effort to make them rescind their decision.
Adamu said the defections were expected due to the electioneering season when the country usually witnesses all manner of things.
He explained, “In every election year, these subs steps give cause for people and stakeholders to sneeze. Nigeria is not an exception and the APC is not an exception.
“So, I don’t give a damn what is happening in other parties, I care about what is happening in APC he said.
Though he added that, the defection is not limited to the ruling party alone as other parties are also feeling the same heat of defection. But being the ruling party, they attract more public attention.
He said, “No responsible leader would not worry about losing a member, not to talk of two, three".
“At the moment we are faced with the stark reality of their problems but we are committed with my colleagues in the National Working Committee to face the problems squarely and solve them by the grace of God.”
