The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, on Friday, deployed a team to deliver immediate humanitarian assistance to persons affected by flooding in several parts of Benue State.
This is coming shortly after President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, announced that he had directed the agency to “immediately mobilize personnel and resources to come to the aid of the victims of the flooding” and that he will be monitoring the situation closely.
In a statement by NEMA, the humanitarian team deployed to the flood-ravaged state is led by the agency’s Director Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Paul Ohemu, from its Abuja Headquarters.
The agency also disclosed that the first batch of emergency relief materials, conveyed in seven 30 tons trucks, have been dispatched and due to arrive Makurdi on Friday.
On Wednesday, the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said over 110,000 people in 24 communities including Makurdi were displaced by the flood at Achusa, Idye, Wurukum Market, Genabe, Industrial Layout, Demekpe, Wadata Market, Katungu, behind the Civil Service Commission, Agboughul-Wadata, among other areas.
The worst hit areas according to SEMA, have been Demekpe and areas behind the Civil Service Commission where 7,820 and 5,777 persons displaced respectively.
