The Supreme Court has upheld a previous judgment by the Court of Appeal which accepted the deregistration of 74 political parties. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had deregistered the affected political parties in 2020 due to their inability to win any election during the 2019 general elections.
The judgment which was delivered by Justice Adamu Jauro of the Supreme Court said the deregistration of the 74 political parties was in line with the laws and in compliance with the extant provisions of the Constitution and Electoral Act.
The deregistered political parties include Alliance for Democracy (AD), Coalition For Change (CC), Fresh Democratic Party (FDP), Grassroots Development Party of Nigeria (GDPN), National Unity Party (NUP), United Progressive Party (UPP), Youth Party (YP), amongst others.
