The Senate president, Ahmed Lawan, has yesterday revealed that the National Assembly cannot afford to fight with President Buhari just to front the political interest of some group in the country.
Lawan made this comment when he received a delegation from Adamawa state that came to pay him a thank you visit for approving the Modibo Adama University Yola into a conventional University.
The delegation leads by, Senator Aisha Dahiru Binani and the Vice-Chancellor of the Institution, Professor Liman Tukur.
While interacting with them, the Senate President said, “When we disagree, we will do so, but if we have no reason to disagree, we will not do that because we want to please anybody.”
Recall some interest group and Senators has for a while now been calling on President Buhari to sack his service chiefs for inefficiency which Buhari has turned deaf ear to the call.
Lawan applauded the armed forces for restoring security in some parts of the country despite the enormous challenges, expressing optimism that it would soon be a thing of the past.
He said, “Those of us in the position of leadership today are probably more challenged than any set of leaders. We need to pray, but we also need to act, work hard and apply ourselves fully and work committed to ensure that we serve Nigerians.
“Nothing is impossible; this situation of insecurity gradually is being reversed. I am particularly happy with recent developments in our armed forces. They are doing better than they were doing before.
According to Lawan, he was optimistic that even the economy would soon pick and the county will get out of the recession that it had entered last month because of the global pandemic.
He noted that with the implementation of the capital budget which would take the country till the end of March and the taking off of the 2021 budget, the country’s economy would receive a boost.
Speaking about converting of the university, he said, it was possible through a collaborative effort between a Legislature and the executive, hoping Nigerians would fairly judge the ninth Assembly for their pro-people legislation despite challenges of the coronavirus.
Lawan thanked the President for assenting to the bill, describing the action as cooperative governance which would ultimately benefit the people he said.
According to Lawan, the legislature is determined to make Nigeria a better place for all, saying what matters is what comes out of the system at the end of the day.
Lawan applauded the ninth Assembly for what they have achieved from 2019 to date despite the distraction from the global pandemic.
Earlier in his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Liman Tukur revealed that preparation is in top gear for the University to transform into its new status of the conventional university.
