The Department of State Services (DSS) is said to have placed under surveillance, some prominent figures who were recently nominated as ministers by the Biafra Zionist Federation (BZF).  The Biafra Zionist Federation (BZF) on 31st July, announced some prominent figures as members of an interim government for the Republic of Biafra.

Those listed include Prof. Chukwuma Soludo as governor of the Central Bank of Biafra (CBB), Prof. Pat Utomi as foreign affairs minister, Mrs Aruma Oteh as finance minister and former Personal Secretary to Late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu as petroleum minister.

Others are the former minister of power, Prof Barth Nnaji; former minister of information, Prof Jerry Gana and former information minister, Labaran Maku.

Following the announcement, the failure by those nominated to dissociate themselves from the move has been viewed as a tacit support for the activity of the group, prompting the secret police to place them under close watch.

A statement credited to an insider in the organisation said: “In this particular instance, we are worried about the deafening silence on the part of these respected citizens. What do they lose by renouncing their listing by the secessionists”.

The report stated that the DSS is said to be giving those affected more time to respond to the announcement before it takes further action in line with the provisions of the law.

Meanwhile, the development is said to have prompted a wave of reaction from those nominated, as the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Science and Technology, Hon. Beni Lar, who is one of the nominees, has dissociated himself from any such secessionist move. Lar said he was in support of one Nigeria.

Similarly, former minister of information, Labaran Maku, has vehemently denied knowing the pro-Biafran group, Biafra Zionist Federation, and turned down its ministerial offer. Maku who has been named aviation minister by the group for its self-declared Republic of Biafra, declared that he remains committed to Nigeria’s unity.

He noted that he could not have been offered a ministerial slot by the group because he belongs to APGA; a national party, and he comes from Nassarawa state.
