President Buhari has jetted out to the Republic of Mali today for a one day visit as part of the African leader's committee for bringing lasting peace in Mali. Following the coronavirus pandemic that threatened the whole world since February this year, President Buhari has been in Nigeria except the last time he visited Addis Ababa on February 7, 2020, for the 33rd ordinary sessions for the head of government of African Union.

As released by Mr. President Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, he said the trip of President Buhari to Mali followed a briefing from the former President Jonathan, who led a special envoy to champion Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to Mali.

Jonathan was appointed by the ECOWAS to lead its mediation team to help bring a lasting solution to the current socio-economic tension that is going on in Mali.

The statement said, “The Nigerian President and some ECOWAS leaders led by the chairman of the authority of heads of state and government of the sub-regional organization, President Issoufou Mahamadou of Niger Republic, agreed to meet in Mali to engage in further consultations towards finding a political solution to the crisis in the country,” the statement said.

“Host President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Presidents Machy Sall of Senegal, Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana and Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire are expected to participate in the Bamako meeting.

“Jonathan was at the statehouse in the company of Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, President of ECOWAS Commission, on Tuesday to brief Buhari on the unfolding situation in Mali, necessitating the visit of ECOWAS leaders to consolidate on the agreements reached by various parties.”

All is not well in Mali as the citizens are protesting against the President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita who is under pressure to resign from his people.

The resistance group, M5 are demanding that the constitutional court be dissolved and President Keita vacates his office before peace can be guaranteed.

The tension followed the court nullification of results of some 31 parliamentary members seats awarding the seat to other contending members which the citizen accused the President of influencing the court decision. Consequently, a riot broke out which as at present has consumed about 11 lives and still counting.
