The House of Reps has passed, for second reading; a bill which if successfully passed would allow an independent candidate to contest for elective position in the country without necessarily belonging to a political party.
The bill, sponsored by the House Chief Whip, Mohammed Tahir Monguno (APC Borno), seek to alter the 1999 constitution to give room for those who do not belong to any political party to have inclusiveness into elective offices.
While debating on the bill, some members applauded the bill while others had reservations and called for proper scrutiny of the bill.
Sergius Ogun (PDP Edo) and Aminu Suleiman (APC Kano) while arguing separately during the debate supported the bill, while James Faleke (APC Lagos) kicked against the bill.
Subsequently, the bill was referred to the constitutional review committee for further legislative action.
