The Kano state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has on Thursday requested President Buhari to ease the total lockdown imposed on Kano despite recording 80 new cases of the coronavirus.

Ganduje made the appeal yesterday at the Government House during the inauguration of seven-member specialised experts to support the state technical committee on the coronavirus.

President Buhari had on Monday imposed a total lockdown in Kano for two weeks with immediate effect to arrest the spread of the dreaded coronavirus, following the mass deaths that were recorded in Kano the week earlier.

However, Ganduje solicited for an urgent easing of the lockdown, saying the economic hardship is taking its toll on his people.

The Governor said his people are running out of food especially during this month of Ramadan, saying allowing them will enable them restock their homes with food.

Ganduje in his statement;

“We would engage the presidential taskforce on COVID-19 to seek permission to relax the total lockdown imposed on Kano.

We are making this appeal on behalf of our people who are presently running out of food items.

“We love the Federal government to relax the lockdown for a period of time to enable people to stock their homes, especially now that majority of us are fasting.

It will also ease the economic hardship in the state,” This Day quoted him as saying.

Meanwhile, he said his government is expanding the facility to accommodate more suspected cases of the coronavirus.
