President Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has been earning only 50% of their salaries since they came to power in 2015.
This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the President and Media, Femi Adesina, during the Channel Television Political program “Politics Today “ on Tuesday, saying amid Nigeria battling the outbreak of coronavirus which has claimed about 41,000 lives and infected over 830,000 persons globally, President Buhari and his Vice had since forfeited 50% of their earnings for the generality of Nigerians.
Adesina revealed that politicians, philanthropist and other multinational companies have continued to make huge donations to combat the scourge with Ministers and legislature all across board donating 50% of their salaries, Buhari/Osinbajo was not left alone as they set the precedence early before now.
However, when Adesina was asked whether Buhari/Osinbajo were donating their 50% salaries for the fight against the COVID-19, he said there was no need for them to say such.
Adesina disclosed that since the duo came on board, they have been on only 50% of their salaries, his statement; “Already, the President and the Vice President are earning 50 per cent of their salaries, they are not earning 100 per cent,”
Although Adesina did not disclose the exact amount that the President and his vice earn, however, said since July 2015 barely two months when the President came on board, the duo declared they will only accept 50% of their entitled salaries.
Meanwhile, the current annual remuneration of the President of Nigeria as published by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission is N14, 058,820.00.
Five years after, Adesina, insisted that “right from the beginning of their first term in office, they had chosen to earn only half of their salaries they were entitled to.
” And this was seen as an act of patriotism by many.
