Former Vice President who was also a Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has today declared that he is ready to work with any willing person to ensure Nigerians are protected from the dreaded coronavirus.
Atiku made the declaration today while advising the federal Government on restricting flights into Nigeria so as to effectively contain the coronavirus epidemic.
The former vice president called on the federal government to come up with measures that will deliberately be geared towards protecting Nigerians.
Recall that the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire had a few weeks ago confirmed the presence of Coronavirus in Nigeria.
Following the minister’s disclosure, Atiku had urged the government to restrict flights into Nigeria.
Accordingly, Atiku urged the government to tore the side of caution through ensuring that adequate protection is put in place for Nigerians against further contracting the disease.
In his verifiable tweeter account, the PDP chieftain wrote: “Two weeks ago, when #Nigeria recorded its index case of the #coronavirus, I had cause to urge the Federal Government to restrict flights from nations with a high prevalence of the Coronavirus plague. This is in line with global best practices.
“This is a patriotic call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to take every reasonable step to protect the citizens of Nigeria, by temporarily suspending flights to and from such countries, until we build up our ability to contain the coronavirus.
“Our borders should, however, be open to Nigerian citizens, regardless of their status.
“Despite the commendable efforts of our patriotic health officials, it will be recalled that to date, we are yet to identify or locate multiple passengers who flew in with the index case from Italy. They could be anywhere.
“We must, therefore, err on the side of caution.
We cannot afford to broaden the possibility of future infections.
According to Atiku, the economic impact the disease will cause on Nigerians if not tackled head-on is capable of affecting our National security, and the status of the
African’s most economic giant.
The former vice president called on all and sundry to drop the political difference aside and fight a common enemy because he said, he is first a Nigerian, and he is ready and willing to work with anybody at any time to confront the menace at all cost so that Nigeria will be safe for all of us since is the only country that belongs to us in a global arena.
He added, “We must act now.
We must put Nigeria and her citizens first. We must ensure that our national policy is deliberately tailored to protect our most excellent national resource, the great Nigerian people.”
