The House of Representatives has agreed to intercede in the face-off unfolding between the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and the Federal Government on Tuesday, March 10, made worse with the ongoing two weeks warning strike. The intervention is with a view to finding amicable resolution with regard to ASUU's insistence of not joining the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS, program.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion by Dachung Bagos titled "Urgent Public Importance and the Academic Staff Union of Universes (ASUU) Strike." Moving the motion, Bagos said ASUU had on March 9, 2020, after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Enugu State, threatened to go on two weeks warning strike.
He noted that the strike is a great development of concern owing to the fact that schools had just resumed for academic activities and that if allowed to take full effect, the strike would cost a lot of students an extra academic year. The lawmaker also mentioned that the repeated yearly strike by ASUU is becoming a serious embarrassment to the country. The House is preparing to meet with the leadership of the union members, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngigie today.
