BREAKING: In Separate Sittings, Tribunal Sacks PDP And APC Reps Members

The 9th Assembly would continue to undergo alignment and realignment as on 9th September 2019 the National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital sacked the lawmaker representing Ikwo\Ezza South Federal Constituency, Lazarus Ogbee and declared his main challenger, Chinedu Ogar of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner.

 

Ogbee, who contested the 2019 election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was declared the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

However, the Justice Sika Henry Aprioku-led tribunal set aside the declaration of Ogbee by declared his opponent and plaintiff in the matter, Ogar of the APC as the rightful winner of the election.

Ogar of the APC had challenged the results of the election, claiming that his votes were erroneously reduced by the electoral umpire, INEC to favour the PDP candidate.

The tribunal agreed with the petitioner and restored the votes cancelled in over 10,000 wards by INEC.

According to the Tribunal, the final results of the election should be 36,238 votes for the APC as against PDP’s 33,263 votes.

Consequently, the Tribunal directed the electoral umpire to immediately issue the APC candidate certificate of return and withdraw same earlier issued to the PDP candidate.

In a related development, on Monday 9, September 2019, the National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, nullified the election of a member of House of Representatives, Kolapo Osunsanya, representing Ijebu Central Federal Constituency.

Osunsanya, a member of the All Progressives Congress was sacked by the Justice Wakkil Alkali Gana-led election petition tribunal by cancelling the votes of Ward 5, Unit 5 in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area; Ward 10, Unit 3 in Odogbolu Local Government and the entire Ward 8 in Ijebu-North Local Government, all in the Ijebu Central Federal Constituency.

consequently, the Tribunal directed the electoral umpire to immediately, within 90-day conduct rerun election for the affected areas.

The decision followed a petition filed by Shote of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who contested for the position alongside Osunsanya of the APC candidate.
