The Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) campaigners have called on the Federal government to immediately relaunch the Safe School Initiative (SSI) and put in place modalities for its effective implementation to facilitate the safety of teachers and pupils, especially in Lagos state. The group made this position in an open letter signed by its convener, Oby Ezekwesili and addressed to the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and the Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode.

The group said the letter became imperative following the state of insecurity across public schools especially the delay in the release of some school children abducted from the Lagos State Model College Igbonla Epe, Lagos State 2 months ago.
The group warned that the delay in the release of the school children was instilling fear in the minds of other pupils, forcing some to drop out of school. The letter reads in parts,

“We had, based on two previous swift and successful rescues of other abducted school children by the Police and the Lagos State Government, believed that our six school boys would be back by now. We write to commiserate and engage with the Federal as well as Lagos State Governments on the tragic abduction of six students from the Lagos State Model College, Igbonla, Epe on Wednesday, May 24, 2017.

“We have followed with intense interest any development on the rescue effort announced by Lagos State and the Nigerian Police since the unfortunate incident. Sadly, 50 days after today, having only seen the worried parents publicly seeking information on government action for the rescue of their children, we are compelled to reach out to learn more from your two respective authorities,” the group stated.

It advised the government to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety of schools and school children across the country.
