The Supreme Court will today determine the authentic leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) when it rules on an appeal filed by the Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee. The Makarfi faction of the party had approached the Supreme Court after a Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt recognized Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff as the authentic National Chairman of the Party.

The five-man panel of Supreme Court Justices led by the Chief Justice of the Nigeria (CJN0, Justice Walter Onnoghen had on May 22 reserved judgment on the matter. Both parties have however been informed by the court that the judgment will be delivered today.

When contacted, one of the vocal governors in the Makarfi faction disclosed that the group was mobilizing supporters to witness the ruling. He expressed optimism that the ruling will be in their favour. He however refused to disclose whether he will abandon the party if Sheriff wins.
