Emerging reports have revealed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday proceeded with the recall process of Sen. Dino Melay, despite court order restraining the Commission from going ahead with the process pending the determination of the substantive suit.

Vigil360 gathered that on Monday the Commission had already pasted the notice of the verification of the recall process at the Kogi State office in Lokoja. The notice hinted that the exercise will commence on August 19th between 8am-2pm across all polling units in Kogi West Senatorial District.

Meanwhile, the National Commissioner of INEC, North-Central, Mallam Mohammed Haruna was quoted as saying that the decision of the commission to go ahead was based the ruling of an Appeal Court in 2001.

According to him, "the Court of Appeal had since 2001 decided that a court cannot stop the recall of a lawmaker. Consequently, we are obligated to go ahead with the process based on precedent" he added.

Meanwhile, Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Senate President, says he has pity for the people of Kogi State for having a State Governor who he alleged is championing the recall of a Senator from his State. He made the statement on the floor of the senate on Tuesday while reacting to advertorial sponsored by the State Government and signed by attorney-general of the State, Ibrahim Muhammad.

Reacting, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, called the action “irresponsible” and very unfortunate for the people of Kogi State.
