The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), and the head of Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL) Debo Adeniran, have berated the Senate President,

Senator Bukola SARAKI for describing the operation of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) as showmanship and mere media sensationalism. Saraki who made the statement at the launching of a book titled "Antidotes of Corruption: The Nigerian Story", written by Senator Dino Melaye, claimed that for the nation's anti-corruption war to be successful, there is dire need for "highly experienced and technically sound investigation and forensic officers. It requires anti-corruption agents and agencies that are truly independent and manifestly insulated from political interference and manipulation''.

He added that "we are still far from these standards because currently, our anti-corruption agencies are under pressure to justify their existence and show that they are working. consequently, they often tend to prefer the show over the substance to provide momentary public excitement"

Reacting to Saraki's comment, Prof. Sagay described the claim as pathetic. He explained that the war on corruption was "not showmanship, but a tough struggle against the dark satanic forces that have run down the country's economy and they are very powerful.; so it's going to be a very tough struggle and we will carry on and we will get better and better with time"

He further hinted that his Committee has given anti-graft agencies some tips that would assist them in their campaign going forward.

On his part, Adeniran maintained that Saraki's outburst was inappropriate but not surprising, since he is facing several corruption charges. According to him, "because Saraki is psychologically involved in all the accusations especially leveled by the EFCC and the CCT, you will expect that he will discredit the agencies bringing him to the fore.

Also, because the executive has not risen to cover up the Senate members undergoing investigation, the Senate President will not be in good terms with the executive. Saraki should be ashamed to say that the government where he is number three is sensational." he concluded
