President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Mallam Abubakar Nuhu Fikpo as the substantive Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE). Mr. President also appointed Comrade Issa Aremu as Director of the National Institute for Labour Studies (NILS). Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to the President Mallam Garba Shehu announced the appointments on his official Twitter handle on Tuesday. “President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Mallam Abubakar Nuhu Fikpo as the substantive Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE). Before his appointment, Mallam Fikpo held the position in acting capacity,” the spokesman wrote.

“President Buhari has also approved the appointment of Comrade Issa Aremu as the Director of the National Institute for Labour Studies (NILS). Comrade Aremu has been a notable Trade Unionist who has risen through the ranks in the Trade Union hierarchy in Nigeria.

“The appointments which are for a period of four years take effect from May 18, 2021,” he added.

Recall that President Buhari in January nominated Malam Fikpo pending the appointment of a substantive Director-General for the NDE.

This followed a report that reports that President Buhari had on Dec. 9, 2020, relieved the former DG of the agency, Nasiru Ladan Argungu, of his appointment.

According to Shehu, the directive on the sack of NDE DG was given on Dec. 4, 2020, but took effect from Dec. 7, 2020.
