The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has on Friday announced that all 15 pending bye-elections would be conducted on Saturday, December 5th, 2020. This was made known in a statement by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman (Information and Voter Education Committee), Barr. Festus Okoye. The statement read in part: “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) met Friday, November 13, 2020, and among other things reviewed the outcome of its quarterly engagements and consultations with critical stakeholders in the electoral process, and further reviewed the security situation and other challenges regarding the 15 pending bye-elections in 11 states.

“The Commission consulted with Political Parties and Civil Society Organizations on Tuesday 10th November 2020 and with the Media and the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) on Wednesday 11th November 2020. Finally, it met with all Resident Electoral Commissioners on Thursday, 12th November 2020.

“Based on these consultations, the Commission believes that security in the affected States has improved while the environmental challenges have reasonably abated. Consequently, the Commission has decided to hold all the pending bye-elections on Saturday December 5, 2020.”

The pending bye-elections slated for December 5th, 2020 are Bayelsa Central Senatorial District; Bayelsa West Senatorial District; Nganzai and Bayo Constituencies in Borno State; Cross River North Senatorial District; Obudu Constituency in Cross River.

Others are Ibaji Constituency in Kogi State; Bakura Constituency in Zamfara; Kosofe II Constituency in Lagos; Lagos East Senatorial District; Imo North Senatorial District; Plateau South Senatorial District.

The federal and state bye-elections were as a result of the resignation or death of members in 8 states of the federation.

Voters and stakeholders are encouraged to continue to cooperate with INEC in their efforts to deliver free and fair elections in a safe environment.
