Acting President Yemi Osinbajo SAN warned against hate speeches in the guise of freedom of speech, he averred that hate speech precedes the greatest tragedies in human history. Osinbajo was speaking today at a seminar on National Security and Unity with the theme "Unity in Diversity", organised by the DGSS, Lawal Daura at the Institute for Security Studies, Abuja.

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon who chaired the occasion in n his speech Gen. Gowon said that those threatening the nation should ponder on consequences of their action on innocent citizens.


Meanwhile, DGSS, Daura lauded the effort of the Acting President in the wake of secessionist agitations and hates speeches by various ethnic groups in the country.  He explained that the Acting President Osinbajo valiantly led the charge to put the nation aright, against the background of ethnic agitations.
Osinbajo, in his remarks, stated that he was delighted sharing platform with General Gowon whose 'no victor no vanquished' stance nourished nation after the civil war.


He noted that it was a false narrative that nations formed the way ours was formed are bound to fail. Term mere geographic expression not original to making reference to the statement attributed to Count Metternich in 1814, where he referred to Italy "only a geographical expression."


He emphasized that it is a false narrative that one ethnic group is more corrupt than the other. If you look at a corruption charge sheet, there is unity all tribes unite in perpetrating corruption.


According to the Acting President, you will find all ethnic & religious groups equally represented in corruption. There's complete unity in the business of corruption. It is a false narrative that we are better off when ethnic groups are on their own. He further explained that while different groups have individual strengths, the nation stands in a better stead, united.


He chided those agitating against marginalisation stating that it is not true that those who make marginalisation charges are altruistic. More often what they are saying is "I am marginalised - appoint me ."


Prof. Osinbajo then identified what the people must do as a nation, we must respect each other & not allow anyone to speak carelessly. Secondly, the government must and will ensure the protection of life & property. President Buhari has said this duty of protection is the first duty of govt. So we'll ensure our security agencies know that and build that capacity in them.


Finally, the nation must approach social justice assiduously, and stated that this is why this administration budgeted N500B Social Investment Program for social security and economic empowerment.
