Doyin Okupe, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to change its name if the party want to win election ahead of 2023 general election. Okupe made this call on his Facebook page, saying only change of name and formation of a new party that will give the party an edge to defeat the All Progressive Congress (APC).
The former Jonathan aide said with the status co, it will be near impossible for the PDP to win the 2023 presidential election. Okupe opined that, formation of a new formidable party, birthed by the PDP, with new people consisting of younger people of the society and politicians from different background of diverse political parties which should constitute powerful but disgruntled from the ruling party will guarantee the strengthening of the new formidable party that will neutralise the influence of the present APC.
The post titled ‘‘Why PDP must change its name’ read: “APC controls 21 states and PDP controls 14. PDP in its present state and form cannot win comfortably the Presidential elections in 2023.
He added “To defeat the APC structure in 2023, the present PDP must make itself the arrow head of a national movement to oust the present administration. This is exactly what the component factions of the APC did in 2014.
He continued, “If we engage the APC in a straight political duel, with 21 state governors against 14 combined with the possible reckless use of the power of incumbency, victory becomes a pipe dream.
Okupe posited that when electorates and the populace power is combined and mobilised against the incumbency, they will be left with no option but to give up, and that will guarantee the desired victory for the PDP.
At present, the former aide said the present socio-political baggage and impossible moral burden cannot meet the moral decency, political strength and integrity to champion such movement.
A branded new political party organised and championed by the PDP inclusive of powerful discontented element from the ruling party, with vibrant younger element of the society with different others cut across the strata of different political party will be the only way to defeat the APC administration.
