The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as the winner of the Kogi West Senatorial district after the supplementary election. Prof. Olaide Lawal, the returning officer of the INEC declared that Adeyemi scored a total of 88,373 votes while his contender, Dino Melaye polled a total of 62,133 qualifying Adeyemi the winner of the election and returned as the winner.

During the November 16 election day, the election was declared inconclusive by the INEC due to some difference in winning margin between the two candidates.

Accordingly, the supplementary election was held in 53 polling units spread across the seven local government areas in the senatorial zone.

Appeal court sitting in Abuja nullified the earlier election of the February 23 that returned Dino Melaye as the winner of Kogi west based on the prayer of Adeyemi that the process was marred by malpractice and over-voting. The Court directed INEC to conduct a fresh election in the zone.
