President Muhammadu Buhari has today Thursday received the members of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) at State House, Abuja, where he said he is set to beam his searchlight next on the cost of governance, where he promised to expunge corruption wherever it exists.
Buhari commended the members of the committee for their sacrifice they made through their acceptance to contribute their quota in the development of the Nigerian state. He informed them that those with skeletal in their cupboard will hate them and will also recruit others to do same, no matter their relationship.
The President recalled when he was a military president that he engaged in same expedition of confiscating looted property from corrupt individuals who could not explain the source of their wealth. However, after they left office, those criminals were rewarded back with their looted funds.
He then said with the introduction of TSA, let now see who will empty the treasury for his friends.
Prof. Itse Sagay, the Chairman of PACAC, who led the delegation, confessed Nigeria was lucky ever to have a person of President Buhari’s personality to be on the helm of affairs.
Sagay in his statement said, “We congratulate you for being a star of the anti-corruption struggle in Africa. You attach a lot of importance to the fight against corruption, and we have tried to achieve the aims you had in mind when you established PACAC,”
He added the committee trains, builds capacity of anti-corruption agencies, and has helped to develop a programme of non-conviction assets recovery, which is recording great successes.
Subsequently, PACAC made some recommendations to the President in order to move the anti-corruption war to a greater height.
The recommendations include; reestablishment of the jury system for dispensing criminal justice cases in the country; setting up of a judicial commission on corruption in the judiciary, to be headed by retired judges under the auspices of National Judicial Council (NJC); passage of Proceeds of Crime Act by the National Assembly; the setting up of a Presidential Truth and Restitution Task Force; and a closer look at the cost of governance to weed out all vestiges of corruption.
Meanwhile, Buhari promised to look into these recommendations as spelt out.
