Senator-elect representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Ovie-Omo-Agege has been elected Deputy President of the 9th Senate.

Omo-Agege who was endorsed by the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress, APC polled 68 votes to defeat his sole rival and former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu who polled 37 votes.

Before the election, some senators-elect on the platform of the APC, who had rejected the endorsements of Omo-Agege by the party and insisted on contesting the position, dumped their ambitions.

Former Governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu who had blasted the APC for failing to recognize the South-east in the distribution of offices in the National Assembly, withdrew from the race to becoming the Deputy Senate President on the day of the election and inauguration. He maintained that his withdrawal was in the interest of the party.
