Senator Ahmed Lawan of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC has been elected the President of the 9th Senate.

The Yobe state Senator-elect polled a total of 79 votes to defeat his only rival, Senator Ali Ndume who scored 28 eight votes.

Lawan had earlier been endorsed by the APC National Working Committee (NWC) and President Muhammadu Buhari to the consternation of Ndume who insisted on contesting the position against the decision of the party.

On Monday night, major opposition Party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP rejected the endorsement of Lawan, opting to support Ndume for the position of the Senate President.

Before the commencement of the voting, the session became rowdy after the Clerk of the National Assembly said an open secret ballot system would be adopted. Some senators believed to be supporters of Lawan insisted on open ballot system, citing court order.

Lawan has been sworn in by the Clerk of the National Assembly.
