The President of the Appeal Court and Chairman of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa has recused herself from the election petition tribunal following an application filed by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and its presidential candidate in the last election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

The PDP had asked Bulkachuwa to recuse herself because she is married to a senator-elect on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The party also contended that Justice Bulkachuwa's son campaigned for President Muhammadu Buhari during the presidential election, stressing that she could be biased.

Although the five-man panel of the tribunal, in a unanimous ruling dismissed the application, Bulkachuwa said she was withdrawing for “personal reasons.”

According to her

”I have allowed the ruling on the application urging me to rescue my membership of the tribunal to test the position of the law. Now that the application has been dismissed on account of incompetence, I hereby announce my withdrawal from the panel.

“The remaining four members of the panel would remain while step would be taken to appoint my replacement’’, she said.

Justice Olabisi Ige, who read the lead ruling of the panel, had held that the relationship between Justice Bulkachuwa and her husband, Adamu Bulkachuwa, who is a senator-elect, and her son Aliyu Abubakar, a governorship aspirant, both on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, was not weighty enough to infer that she would be biased in her handling of the proceedings of the panel
