The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the recently concluded general elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has decried the growing number of suicide incidents in the country.

Atiku who made his thought known via his verified Twitter handle blamed the development on the neglect of early signs of depression by parents as well as the community as a whole.

He admonished people especially parents to look out for early signs of depression in the lives of young people, stressing that such state usually drives them to suicide.

His tweet read

“The rate of suicide among our youth is worrisome. I believe that as parents and community, we need to pay close attention for early signs of depression among our young people, particularly in these depressing times.”

The call is coming barely a few days after a young Christian music minister, formerly with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Michael Arowosaiye committed suicide in Apo, Abuja. While some reports claimed that the victim took his life following financial issues and inability to pay his house rent, other reports claimed that the incident occurred after his nude pictures emerged.
