The federal government has descended on Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen directing him to vacate his office as head of judiciary over an allegation of skewed asset declaration. One of the cardinal stands of the Buhari administration is war against corruption, the Federal Government will on Monday, January 14th arraign the CJN before justice Danladi Yakubu-led
- Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in Abuja on charges bordering on his failure to declare his asset as required by law and also his involvement in operating Bank Domiciliary Foreign Currency Account.
In the interim, charges pressed against Justice Onnoghen has been filed and has already been served with a court summon on Friday at his official residence in Abuja to appear before the Tribunal.
Justice Onnoghen is being accused of maintaining a Foreign Currency Domiciliary account containing Dollar account, Pound Sterling Account and Euro Account and also his refusal to declare his asset as required by law which contravened the constitution as against public officials.
Justice Onnoghen may be the first amongst Nigerian Chief Justices to face arraignment for criminal charges while in office by the Federal Government the first of its kind.
Apart of putting CJN in the dock, motion on notice to also be filled against him praying the Tribunal to order him to vacate his office so as to avoid interference during his trial.
However, it was gathered that prominent lawyers have volunteered to put heads together to rescue one of them Justice Onnoghen in the bid to release him off the hook of the law.
