2023: CJN Swears In Election Petition Tribunal Justices

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola has sworn in members of the Election Petition Tribunal for the 2023 general election in an event on Monday at the National Judicial Institute (NJI) in Abuja. Members of the tribunal, which consists of over 300 were set up ahead of the general elections in February 2023. Having administered the oath of office on the members of the Tribunal, the CJN urged the judicial officers not to treat their assignments with levity, warning that he will not tolerate any form of judicial recklessness.

Independence Day Address: Buhari Rue's Nigerians Pains, Plea To ASUU To Call Off Strike

President Muhammadu Buhari, during his Independence Day address, expressed concern about the pains Nigerians are going through in the wake of security and economic challenges facing the country and has assured that these lapses will be tackled with all available resources. He then went on to plead with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its eight-month-old strike.

INEC Rules Out Extension Of Voters Registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Saturday, ruled out the possibility of extending the ongoing continuous voter’s registration (CVR) exercise, scheduled to end on July 31, 2022. INEC National Commissioner in charge of Voter Education and Publicity, Barr. Festus Okoye, disclosed this in Awka, Anambra State while interacting with some journalists. He noted that the CVR would be brought to an end in order to enable the commission to carry on with its other constitutional responsibilities.

The presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu,  Other governors including those of Ondo, Ogun, Jigawa, Kebbi and so on were among those present during the inauguration of Biodun Oyebanji as the new Governor of Ekiti state and Monisade Afuye, as Deputy Governor. Ondo Governor Rotimi Akeredolu; his Osun counterpart Gboyega Oyetola; ex-Ekiti Governor, Ayodele Fayose and other dignitaries have arrived the Ekiti Parapo Pavillion, the venue for inauguration of the Ekiti Governor-elect, Biodun Oyebanji. Oyebanji with his deputy, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye would be sworn into office by Ekiti Chief Judge Justice, Oyewole Adeyeye.

President Buhari Reappoints Bashir Ahmad

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed his former Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, as Special Assistant to the President on Digital Communications. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, confirmed the appointment in a letter of appointment addressed to Ahmad, dated July 20, 2022.

NBA Elects Yakubu Maikyau As New President

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has elected Yakubu Maikyau, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), as the 31st President of the association. Maikyau who will be taking over from Olumide Akpata polled a total of 22, 342 votes, followed closely by fellow SAN, Joe-Kyari Gadzama, Chairman of the NBA Securities Agencies Relations Committee, who polled 10, 842 votes.
