President Muhammadu Buhari has pledged his support for the former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iwela, that the Federal Government will do all it takes to see her become the Director-General of World Trade Organization (WTO).
The President made the statement on Monday 12th October 2020 when he met behind closed doors with WTO DG aspirant at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Also, the President assured her that the country would explore every opportunity and deploy its energy as the next DG of WTO.
Whoever emerges from the 2 candidates, Ngozi Okonjo- Iwela and the South Korean candidate, Yoo Myung-Hee for the third and final and final round in the selection process will become the first female to led the 25- year old organization.
The President stated, '' I assure you that we will do all that we can to ensure that you emerge as the Director-General of WTO, not only because you are a Nigerian, but because you are hardworking Nigerian. You deserve this."
"I did the same for Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina for the President of the African Development Bank. Both of you served the country under the Peoples Democratic Party. You are both highly qualified. We will continue to support you. I will immediately make those calls.
The Economist Ngozi in her response thanked the President and his ministers, particularly the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment for supporting her loyally.
