The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has advised tertiary institutions like universities to set up rehabilitation centers for students who test positive for hard drugs.
This advice was given at a press conference by the Director, Media, and Advocacy, NDLEA, Femi Babafemi.
Babafemi stated that this was part of the agency’s strategy to get rid of illicit drug use in higher institutions.
He said, “Rather than throwing students who tested positive to illicit drugs out of school system, an action that may compound their woes; rehabilitation centres must be set up.
“This way, such students or new ones could be reintegrated into the school system and still be useful persons in life, not only to themselves, their families and communities but the country as a whole.”
According to him, the infrastructure and other necessary plans to achieve this are currently being established in some higher institutions.
He also stated that every institution should be responsible for drug tests on students, whether independently or in collaboration with the anti-drug agency.
