Bothered by the state of insecurity in the land, the Senate has tasked its committee on communication to invite the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami to discuss the resolution of the senate regarding his Ministry. The decision was necessitated by the growing insecurity in the land, according to Ezrel Tabiowo, Special Assistant to Senate president on press. Lamenting under order 42 and 52 of the red chamber over the rise of insecurity, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha (PDP Taraba South) noted that, the insecurity of the land is at the brink of collapsing. Bwacha said, it was obvious as it has unveiled itself in the form of kidnapping, banditry, assassination and other sundry crimes.
He said, “The assassination of Nasarawa State APC Chairman and other high profile cases are still fresh in our memories. A Chinese National was recently abducted in my community, his whereabouts is still unknown,”.
The senator also accused the security agencies of compromise to some level, saying all is not well.
According to him, security operatives were arrested in some armed robbery, kidnapping incidents and have get away with it. He taunted the communication Ministry that it is only in Nigeria that a communication is being operated without biometric and valid passport.
He reiterated that negotiations of ransom by kidnappers are all done through telephone lines and queried how the authorities can be so negligent of their mandate to protect citizens.
The senator said, “Senate is concerned that the confidence between the protected and the protector is being increasingly eroded resulting to breakdown of law and order as demonstrated in the #EndSARS protest which was subsequently hijacked by miscreants.
He further accused the political class of being responsible for recruiting dangerous criminals to destabilise the country for their selfish reason.
He added, “These evil intents can be easily achieved given the poor control over communication facilities viz inability of our security apparatus and service providers to effectively manage this all important sector,”
