The House of Representative on Wednesday suddenly cut short its sitting after the presiding officer announced that protesting Shiite members has gate crashed into the National Assembly complex.
Yusuf Lasun, the Deputy speaker House of reps announced that the protesters, members of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), Shiites have forced their way through the first gate of the National Assembly.
The incident compelled the legislatures to suddenly adjourn their plenary which was on the process before it was aborted.
Members of the IMN have held regular protests demanding the release of their leader who was arrested since December 2015.
Their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, was arrested alongside his wife after a confrontation with soldiers that lead to the killing of hundreds of its members in Zaria, Kaduna State, sometimes between December 12 and 15, 2015. Some of Mr. El-Zakzaky’s children were amongst the victims.
A judicial investigation panel set up by the Kaduna State Governor, found the military culpable in the massacre, recommending a major-general for trial.
The Federal government is yet to hold anybody responsible for the killings.
At least 347 people were confirmed to have died and were given mass burial in Kaduna.
The International Criminal Court is still studying the December 2015 incident.
Meanwhile, Mr. El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeena, are still in detention and are being prosecuted for their alleged roles in the killing of a soldier.
