There are speculations that a fresh strike may be underway in Nigerian public universities as the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities, ASUU holds a marathon National Executive Council, NEC, meeting in Calabar, Cross Rivers state to decide the next line of action It was learned that ASUU has been in a meeting since yesterday, November 3rd entered today Sunday 4th to further brainstorm on the University's faith as the federal government has remained adamant on their eight months' salaries withheld.
The academicians have been at loggerheads with the Nigerian government over the year 2009 agreement and the compulsory directive by the government asking ASUU to join the Integrated personnel Payroll, IPPIS, which is a payment platform for all federal government workers.
The problem snowballed into ASUU proceeding on industrial action on 14th February 2022 which lasted about eight months on a stretch making the federal government withhold salaries for these months that were not worked.
The federal government insisted on its “no-work No-pay “policy for the period the academicians stayed away from their duties in protest.
Dailypost confirmed that the ASUU is currently in a meeting at the time of filling this report where the lecturer confirmed the meeting saying;
“Yes, we have been meeting, and the meeting is still ongoing
There is no picture now because no decision has been taken.
“The issue is that we are just taking reports; for now, we have not reached the issue of withheld salaries,” he said.
Recall ASUU had last week mandated its members to protest over the issue of eight-months withheld salaries which took place at Nsukka, UNN, University, Lagos, UNILAG, and Ibadan UI, amongst others took the protest to their various management.
