The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian University (ASUU) has extended its ongoing industrial action/strike by another twelve weeks.
This was announced by the union at the end of its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting which was convened at Abuja yesterday, Sunday, 08th May 2022. Shortly after the meeting was commenced, ASUU hinted that the industrial action might likely be extended following the unserious nature of the approach by the federal government they alleged.
The ASUU National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke said that the extended time was to give the government enough time to organize itself and resolve the outstanding issues, the effective time which will take effect from 12;01 am on Monday 08 May 2022.
The strike action which was commenced on February 14, 2022, announced a warning strike four weeks before the comprehensive strike was started following the inability of the ASUU and the federal government to understand each other.
ASUU is insisting that the federal government should provide them with revitalization funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the UTAS payment platform for the payment of salaries and allowances of university lecturers.
The strike which was supposed to have ended today as ASUU promised to resume sitting with the federal government, the union slammed another three months of the strike to continue.
