The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has today disclosed its 2021 West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for secondary School candidates scheduled for May/June, may not hold.
Head of the National; office for the examination body, Mr. Patrick Areghan made this known today in Lagos while announcing the release of results for the 2021 first series of the WASSCE for private candidates.
Areghan blamed the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic for frustrating their activities at the council, saying the education sector received a bit hit from the virus.
He noted that the entire calendar for all their exams has been distorted, and therefore, conducting an exam as scheduled may be near impossible.
The WAEC official said, “Let me use this opportunity to dispel rumors being peddled about by some people regarding the conduct of the WASSCE for school candidates, 2021.
“The effect of the COVID-19 is still very much felt in the education sector and this has taken its toll on the academic calendar in the country.
He, therefore, concluded that the May/June examination for this year may not hold for the obvious reasons mentioned.
Areghan revealed that an international timetable for the examination may soon be released by the council.
He, therefore, advised stakeholders of the council to remain calm as the office decides for a convenient date and shall be communicated to them.
Meanwhile, he enjoined school proprietors and schools principal to stick to the usual timeframe of registering candidates for the examination.
He said, to make the entry process seamless, “All schools are advised to get this aspect of the registration process right.
