The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has disclosed that it cannot at the moment, pay the N30,000 minimum wage to corps members because it is yet to get such directive from the Federal Government. Also, disclosed a plan to hand over fake graduates coming for mobilization to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for prosecution.
This was disclosed by the NYSC Director-General, Shuaibu Ibrahim( BRIG-GEN), during a media parley on Thursday 15th August 2019 in Abuja.
He added that the NYSC Act stipulates that fake graduates are liable to two years in jail, after the prosecution and that, fake corps producing institution will be blacklisted if such cases from their institutions persist.
In his words “Let me reiterate our warning that any person who presents fake certificate in an attempt to get mobilized for service will be handed over to the security agencies for prosecution.
We are working on those fake corps members.
They will be arrested and prosecuted,” Ibrahim stated.
The DG informed that Some people have asked him if NYSC has the power to crosscheck the certification of graduates and he responded with no, but it has the power to ensure that unqualified Nigerians are not mobilized for service.
He highlighted on the NYSC Act which stated that unqualified Nigerians who go for service are liable for jail (term) of two years.
So, the NYSC will never condone or abet illegality in any form.
The NYSC DG also disclosed that the since inception, it has mobilized a total of 4,644,804 Nigerians graduates.
Speaking on the N30,000 minimum wage issue as proposed allowance for corps members, Mr. Ibrahim stated that the process is still ongoing.
"The moment it is transmitted to NYSC, we will make it known to the corps members and the general public,” he emphasized.
On commitment by the scheme to equip corps members with requisite skills to be self-reliant, the DG added that 1,132,409 corps members had been equipped with Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development package provided by the NYSC.
And that a number of skill acquisition centers have also been established across the country for the post-camp training
