The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a two weeks ultimatum to both federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) to negotiate out the strike action or they will face the student wrath.
The statement was contained in a communiqué signed by Danielson Akpan, the Union national president on 24th Dec, 2018. According to Premium Times.
The ASUU strike which commenced on 4th November as the lecturers accused the federal government of not implementing their previous agreements. ASUU held series of meeting with the federal government in recent time, however, it all ended inconclusive. Both parties could not reach consensus.
The leadership of the student Association frowned for not been part of the negotiation between the two parties.
The NANS leadership after a series of consideration and scrutiny of the lingering strike action by the university lecturers has issued a two weeks ultimatum to both ASUU and the federal government to call off the strike or face confrontation from the Nigerian students.
The student revealed to their dismay, ASUU has resisted strongly the idea of having student representation during those meetings, but instead called for closed door meeting between the federal government and the ASUU.
According to the student’s leadership, the federal government have agreed they observe negotiations; therefore the students are at the receiving end, the students added they demand to know what ASUU is hiding?
The student’s leader revealed the strike has affected the student’s academics negatively and has a tendency of disfranchising student against the 2019 general election.
Meanwhile, the leader threatens a mass protest by students across the country with 100,000 students to protest in Abuja. “They must be ready to pay back monetary compensations to Nigerian students from their salaries that continue to count even when they are not working at all, at our detriment,”
