FG Plans To Increase Hazard Allowance, Retirement Age of Health Workers

The Federal Government has announced plans to increase the hazard allowance of N5000 for health workers by 350 and 600 percent increment for junior and senior workers respectively.

The government also plans to increase the retirement age of doctors and health workers from 60 to 65 years while 70 years for consultants.

This was disclosed to journalists at the Presidential Villa, Abuja by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.

Ngige said, "The government side gave them an offer based on the reality that we have on the ground, that the economy is not doing very well and the capital component of the budget is actually being funded on borrowing. The earnings of the government have also drastically gone down.

"So, they are going back to their people with the government offer and they asked for 2 weeks adjournment to enable them to conclude consultation with their members and report back to us," he said.

Present at the meeting were representatives of the Nigerian Medical Association and affiliate associations along with the Joint Health Sector Unions.

Government representatives include the Minister of Health, Ministers of State for Health, Budget and Planning, and Labor and Employment.

Others include the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health along with his counterpart in Labor and Employment.
